Antonis Liakos
Antonis Liakos was born in 1947 in Athens. He is a historian and an emeritus professor at the University of Athens. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Between 1969 and 1973, he was imprisoned by the Dictatorship. After graduating in 1977, he pursued postgraduate studies in Italy with scholarships from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) and the Council of Europe, and completed his doctoral dissertation in modern and contemporary history at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1984. He taught in the Department of History and Archaeology at the same university from 1981 to 1990. In 1988-1989, he was an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. In 1995, he was a visiting professor at the European University Institute in Florence and at the University of Sydney in Australia. From 1996 to 1997, he was a Visiting Research Fellow at Princeton University in the USA. In 2001, he was a visiting professor at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and in 2003 at New York University. He served as a professor of history at the University of Athens. His research and writing focus on modern and contemporary history, particularly the history of the formation of nation-states in Greece and Italy, social history, and the history of European historiography. His written work includes books (one in Italian) and studies published in Greek, English, French, and Italian scientific journals and specialized volumes. He has been a member of the Board of the General State Archives, the History Committee of the National Bank of Greece, and other initiatives for organizing historical research. He has directed historical publication series for the publishers "Gnosis," "Themelio," and currently "Nefeli," and writes for the newspaper "To Vima." His first published works were: "The Liberals in the Revolution of 1862: The Political Club 'Rigas Feraios'" (1980), "The Refraction of Revolutionary Ideas in the Greek Territory 1830-1850" (1983), "The Possibilities of Reception of Marxism in Greece in the 19th Century" (1984), "The Socialist Workers' Federation of Thessaloniki (Federation) and the Socialist Youth: Their Statutes" (1985).
