Neni Panourgia

Neni Panourgia is an anthropologist, a professor in the Prison Education Program, head of the Justice in Education curriculum, and a Researcher at the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University. She has taught at Princeton, Rutgers, NYU, Bard College, NSSR, and Université de Paris VIII. Her writings cover anthropological and ethnographic theory, art and architecture, politics, epistemology, critical theory, and critical medical studies. Her ethnographic work explores the significance of history and politics, the experience of torture, incarceration, disciplinary tools, and the institutionalization of public space. Her book "Fragments of Death, Fables of Identity. An Athenian Anthropography" received the Grand Prize of the Jury from the International Society for Ethnohistory (1996) and the Folklore Prize in Chicago (1997). She co-edited, with George E. Marcus, the volume "Ethnographica Moralia: Experiments in Interpretive Anthropology" (Fordham University Press).
