Dimitris Karahalios was born in the village of Argoliko, Argolida, a few kilometers from Nafplio, in 1929. His father was a teacher and his mother a farmer. He completed high school in Argos, studied law at the University of Athens, and practiced as a lawyer. In January 1944, he joined EPON. After the assassination of Grigoris Lambrakis, the Democratic Youth Movement Grigoris Lambrakis was founded in his law office. He participated in the movement's five-member office. After the merger of the Democratic Youth Movement Grigoris Lambrakis with the Youth of EDA, he was elected to the Office of the Democratic Youth Lambrakis. Following the declaration of the dictatorship, he fled to Rome, Italy, where he fought within the ranks of the Patriotic Front (PAM). During the split of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) in February 1968, he sided with the KKE Interior. He is married to architect Amalia Panagiotopoulou.
