Filippos Tsalachouris

Philippos Tsalahouris was born in the city of Kamina, Congo, in Central Africa, in August 1969 and grew up in Athens. He studied flute (under N. Depountis) and advanced theory (under N. Nevrakis - Harmony, D. Dragatakis - Counterpoint and Fugue) at the National Conservatory with scholarships from Ms. Kalomoiris and his teachers. His degrees are accompanied by distinctions and monetary awards. He was awarded a Diploma in Composition from the Kodaly Conservatory. He attended seminars on the Kodaly method in Hungary. Among his works are the "Four Symphonies," the one-act operas "The Dream of Satni," "Pushkin and Infidelity" or "The Paper Moon," the "24 Greek Dances" for the Benaki Museum, the Concertino for Viola, the Concertino for Double Bass, the Piano Concerto, the Flute Concerto, the Violin Concerto with Women's Choir, the elegy "Smyrna, the City that Traveled in the Sky" for Violin and Orchestra, the "Three Liturgies," the cantata Cerigo, the "Sonata for Violin and Piano," the "Sonata for Cello and Piano," the ballet "The Red Shoes," "The Selfish Giant," the four "String Quartets," the choral work "The Cat and the Moon," "The Two Rabbis," among others. His works have been presented in Greece, Russia, Spain, Bulgaria, Hungary, England, France, Romania, Uruguay, Italy, Turkey, Ukraine, and Germany by ensembles such as the Athens State Orchestra, the Moscow Radio Chamber Choir, the Liszt Academy Choir, the Kodaly Choir of Debrecen, the ERT Symphony Orchestra, the Pazardzhik Symphony Orchestra, the "Mihail Jora" Philharmonic of Bacau, the Prague Soloists, the New Hellenic Quartet, the Edinburgh Quartet, the Patras Quartet, the Hellenic Ensemble of Contemporary Music, the Orchestra of Colors, the female vocal ensemble Opus Femina, the Symphony Orchestra of Dokuz Eylul University of Smyrna, the Patras Orchestra, among others. He has collaborated with the Art Theatre, the National Theatre, the State Theatre of Northern Greece, among others, composing music for works by Ionesco, Chekhov, Bernhard, Strindberg, Rodrigues, Anagnostaki, Goldoni, Kampanellis, Pinter, Arrabal, Koltès, Williams, Gatzos, Leoti, Horn, Shakespeare, O'Brien, Ibsen, Sophocles, Aristophanes, Miller, among others. He has appeared at the festivals of Epidaurus, Ephesus, Athens, Dodoni, Philippi, the Demetria of Thessaloniki, among others. He taught at the National Conservatory (1990-1995) and at the drama school of the Art Theatre "Karolos Koun" (1991-2005). He has been teaching at the Kodaly Conservatory since 1992. Since September 2004, he has been teaching at the Athens Conservatory. He was elected a regular member of the Union of Greek Composers in May 1997. In December 2008, he was honored by the Academy of Athens with the "Papaioannou" award for his body of work.
