Winston S. Churchill

O Winston Spencer Churchill (1940-2010) was a British politician, the grandson and namesake of Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965). He served as a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party from 1983 to 1997. Before entering politics, he worked as a war correspondent for "News of the World" during the Six-Day War, an experience he documented in his book "Six Day War" (1967). The Churchill family had been involved in war journalism for many years. Sir Winston Churchill covered hostilities in Africa, India, and Cuba. His son, Randolph, covered the Spanish Civil War and, in 1945, became a war correspondent after being victorious in war but defeated in politics. He subsequently covered the Korean War and the campaigns in Suez and Sinai. Winston Churchill, Randolph's son, had just returned from a journalistic trip to western Vietnam when his father encouraged him to visit the Middle East to observe the escalation of the crisis from the Israeli side. In Israel, he met with Moshe Dayan. On May 22, 1967, when David Ben-Gurion learned that Nasser had closed the Straits of Tiran, Winston was having breakfast with the former Prime Minister of Israel at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. Ben-Gurion's comment was: "This means war." Winston departed for London when the war began but soon returned to the Middle East, this time as a correspondent for the "Evening News." During his tenure as a Conservative MP, he visited Beijing with a parliamentary delegation. He also published a volume of his grandfather's famous speeches, titled "Never Give In!: The Best of Winston Churchill's Speeches," in 2003. In 1995, he donated most of his grandfather's archive to Churchill College, Cambridge, for £12.5 million. After retiring from politics, he engaged in writing articles supporting the Iraq War and opposing Islamic terrorism. He passed away on March 2, 2010, in London, at the age of 69, leaving behind two sons and two daughters.
