Manolis N. Stayrakakis

Manolis N. Stavrakakis holds a degree and a Ph.D. from the Agricultural University of Athens. He is a professor at the Agricultural University of Athens and the director of the Viticulture Laboratory at the same university. His scientific career prominently features research and education in the description, identification, and differentiation of Greek grapevine varieties, initially using ampelographic methods, then biochemical markers, and more recently, molecular methods. Additionally, he focuses on the application of clonal selection to highlight the most valuable clones of the Greek vineyard. He has published numerous research papers on these topics. Furthermore, as a scientific coordinator, he has contributed to solving significant issues in the Greek vineyard through the development and implementation of studies and research programs. These include the genetic and ampelographic study of Greek grapevine varieties involved in the production of Malvasia wine, determining the genetic relationship of Muscat grape varieties, documenting and studying the ampelographic and genetic characteristics of endangered Greek varieties, studying the replanting of the Cretan vineyard, implementing a comprehensive program to restore the damage to the Tyrnavos vineyard caused by frost in 2002, and studying the replanting of the vineyards in the Peloponnese affected by the devastating fires in the summer of 2007, among others. He has also participated as a coordinator or member in interdisciplinary and research committees, as well as in working groups focused on viticulture and oenology issues, and has served as a national representative to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).
