Eygenios D. Matthiopoulos

Eugenios D. Matthiopoulos is a Professor of Art History in the Department of History and Archaeology at the School of Philosophy of the University of Crete. He was born in Athens in 1959. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1977-1988) and pursued postgraduate studies in art history and aesthetics at the University of Paris I - Pantheon-Sorbonne (1983-1987). In 1997, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Crete, focusing on "Greece's Participation in the Venice Biennale, 1934-1940." He was responsible for the scientific editing and compilation of the "Dictionary of Greek Artists," published by Melissa Editions, Athens, 1997-2000. He has published four books and more than 40 articles in collective volumes, exhibition catalogs, conference proceedings, and scientific journals. His research interests are oriented towards the history of art in 19th and 20th century Greece, with a particular focus on the intervention of the state and the role of institutions in the art world, as well as the mechanisms of reception of modern art, both in the field of artistic production and in the fields of ideology, aesthetics, art theory, and art criticism.
