Richard J. Evans

Richard J. Evans was born in London in 1947. He holds the Regius Professorship of Modern History at the University of Cambridge. Specializing in the social and cultural history of Europe, particularly in the history of emancipatory and liberation movements related to labor, social inequalities, and urban environments, he has contributed an extensive body of work. Among his publications are: "The Feminists. Women's Emancipation Movements in Europe, America and Australasia" (London, Croom Helm, 1977); "Rethinking German History" (London, Unwin Hyman, 1987); "Comrades and Sisters: Feminism, Socialism and Pacifism in Europe, 1870-1945" (New York, St. Martin's Press, 1987); "In Hitler's Shadow: West German Historians and the Attempt to Escape from the Nazi Past" (New York, Pantheon Books, 1989); and "Cosmopolitan Islanders. British Historians and the European Continent" (Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2009). His work "In Defense of History" has recently been translated into eight languages (German, Korean, Turkish, Japanese, Portuguese, Italian, Swedish, and Chinese).
