Stylianos G. Papadopoulos was born in Ancient Cleonae, Corinthia, in 1933. He studied theology at the University of Athens, patrology and Byzantine studies at the Sorbonne (Paris), Byzantine theology and philology, and the history of philosophy in Munich. He published numerous monographs on Scholastic theology in Byzantium and on the great Fathers of the Church, such as Athanasius the Great, Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, John Chrysostom, and Cyril of Alexandria. At the Theological School of Athens, he became a distinguished doctoral graduate (1967), an associate professor, and a full professor (1972) of Patrology and Patristic Theology. He also taught at other higher education institutions. He published a patrology system of the same structure (2 volumes), released studies on contemporary theological and philosophical issues (such as theology and language), wrote narrative biographies, organized scientific conferences (including those outside Greece), participated in international conferences, and represented the Patriarchate of Alexandria in inter-Orthodox, inter-church, and inter-Christian conferences and dialogues. He was invited to give lectures at university theological schools in Italy, Russia, England, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Lebanon, Slovakia, Egypt, and Poland. As an emeritus professor, he continued to serve patristic theology and related research.
