Marios P. Mpegzos

Marios Perikleous Begzos was born in 1951 in Athens, where he completed his secondary education (1963 - 1969). He studied theology and philosophy at the universities of Athens (1969 - 1973), Geneva (1973 - 1974), and Tübingen (1979 - 1981) with scholarships from the State Scholarships Foundation (I.K.Y.), the World Council of Churches (W.C.C.), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Since 1975, he has been working at the Theological School of the University of Athens as a scientific assistant to Nikos Nisiotis, whom he later succeeded. He earned his doctorate in 1985 with a dissertation on the philosophy of religion of physicist Werner Heisenberg. Since 1986, he has been teaching philosophy of religion at the University of Athens. Additionally, he has taught philosophy of religion at the University of Marburg in Germany every spring semester (1991 - 1994) and offers courses in religious studies (phenomenology of religion, psychology of religion) at the University of Athens. He has published standalone books and approximately one hundred and fifty articles in scientific journals, university yearbooks, and commemorative volumes. He is a regular contributor to scientific dictionaries and encyclopedias in Greece and abroad (Pedagogical and Psychological Encyclopedia, Philosophical and Sociological Dictionary, Greek Educational Encyclopedia of Ekdotike Athenon, Theologenlexikon, etc.) and is also a member of scientific societies (Hellenic Philosophical Society, Philological Association "Parnassos," etc.). His essay work has received awards (P. Foteas Award, 1999, Greek PEN Center Award, 2007). His studies have been translated into other languages (English, French, German, Italian, Hungarian, Chinese), and he has authored essays in English and German. He has been married since 1979 and is the father of a son (1983).
