May Sinclair

May Sinclair (real name Mary Amelia St. Clair, Rock Ferry, Cheshire, 1863-1946) was a British novelist, short story writer, and poet. She passionately supported the suffragettes and was one of the early advocates of psychoanalysis. She began her long writing career with "Nakiketas and Other Poems" (under the name Julian Sinclair) in 1886. Her novels are distinguished by their deep understanding of life under challenging conditions, with "May Oliver" (1919) and "Life and Death of Harriet Frean" (1922) being among the first works written in the stream of consciousness style.
