Nikolaos M. Panagiotakis
Nikolaos M. Panagiotakis (1935-1997) was born in Heraklion, Crete. He studied philology at the Universities of Athens and London. He became a lecturer at the University of Athens (1966), a visiting professor at the University of Texas (1968), a researcher at the Dumbarton Oaks Center for Byzantine Studies (1969-1970), and a professor of Byzantine Philology at the University of Ioannina (1971-1988) and the University of Crete (1988-1997). He served as vice president and a member of the Governing Committee of the University of Crete (1974-1986) and as director of the Hellenic Institute of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies in Venice (1989-1997). He participated in numerous international scientific conferences and authored many studies on Byzantine and post-Byzantine Hellenism and the culture of Crete during the Venetian period. His most notable works include: "Theodosius the Deacon and his Poem 'The Conquest of Crete'," Heraklion 1960; "Leo the Deacon. A. The Biographical. B. Manuscripts and Editions," Athens, 1965; "The Cretan Period of the Life of Domenikos Theotokopoulos," Rethymno 1986; "The Poet of 'Erotokritos' and Other Veneto-Cretan Poems," Heraklion 1989; "Frangiskos Leontaritis, a Cretan Composer of the Sixteenth Century. Testimonies on His Life and Work," Venice 1990, among others. After his untimely death, the following works were published: "Cretan Theater. Studies," Stigmi, Athens 1998; "The Youthful Years of Domenikos Theotokopoulos," P.E.K., Heraklion 1999. Friends, colleagues, and students dedicated the volume "Remembrance of Nikolaos M. Panagiotakis," P.E.K./Vikelaia Municipal Library of Heraklion, Heraklion, 2000, to his memory.
