James Matthew Barrie

James Matthew Barrie was born in Scotland in 1860 and was the second youngest of ten siblings. He began his career as a journalist, writing for various newspapers and magazines of the time. In 1885, he moved to London, where he started writing novels and plays. Barrie often wrote his works in the Scots language, drawing inspiration from his personal life. In 1891, his book "The Little Minister" was published, becoming a bestseller and adapted for the stage in 1897. This work established him as a playwright. In 1913, he was granted the title of baronet, and in 1922, he was awarded the Order of Merit. Additionally, in 1930, he became the Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, where he had also studied. Barrie is best known to the general public for creating the literary character Peter Pan, the boy who never wanted to grow up. The play "Peter Pan" premiered on December 27, 1904, in London and was an immediate success. In 1911, Barrie wrote the book "Peter and Wendy," based on the play, which uniquely combines elements of reality and fantasy. In 1912, a statue of Peter Pan was erected in Kensington Gardens, London. In 1929, Barrie transferred the copyright of his book to the Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in the British capital, a significant gesture that has helped thousands of children to this day. He died of pneumonia on June 19, 1937, at the age of 76.
