Marina Abramovic
Marina Abramović has been synonymous with performance art in the visual arts scene since the 1970s. Her work has profoundly influenced contemporary art and its evolution, earning her awards at major exhibitions. In 1997, she participated in the Venice Biennale, where she won the prestigious Golden Lion award for her piece "Balkan Baroque."
Marina Abramović was born in Belgrade in 1946, where she began her initial studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1975, she moved to Amsterdam, where she met the German artist Ulay. They formed a partnership and collaborated for the next twelve years, creating contemporary art pieces that were showcased in Europe, America, and Australia. Her work "Balkan Baroque" comments on the situation in the Balkans and her homeland, Yugoslavia, in the early 1990s, serving as a prophetic and pivotal piece long before the dramatic events in her country. In March 2010, MoMA presented a comprehensive exhibition of her work.
