Anna Sewell

Anna Sewell (1820-1878) passionately advocated for animals throughout her life. She was born to Quaker parents in Yarmouth, Norfolk. Her family later settled in London. Between 1836 and 1867, Anna Sewell lived in various places in the south of England, mainly in the city of Bath, known for its thermal baths. In 1867, she returned to her birthplace, Norfolk, and settled in the region's largest city, Norwich. She was disabled for most of her life. She wrote the book "Black Beauty" to denounce the mistreatment often suffered by horses and to raise public awareness. From its very first edition, the book achieved great success, which it maintains to this day, and significantly contributed to the improvement of horses' living conditions in Victorian England. The author passed away five months after the publication of her work, in 1878.
