Giorgos N. Papathanasopoulos

George Papathanassopoulos was born in Athens in 1946 and has maternal roots from Magnesia and Sivrisari in Ionia. He studied Chemistry and Theology at the University of Athens and pursued further education in Business Administration both in Greece and abroad. He served as the Special Secretary of the Union of Greek Chemists and as a director of major companies. In March 2011, he was elected General Secretary of the Cultural Association "Giorgos Sarantaris" and is a member of the Union of Magnesia of Asia Minor, the Union of Smyrnaeans, and the Brotherhood of Sivrisari of Smyrna. He has been a journalist since 1982. From 1985 to 1989, he collaborated with the late publisher of the newspapers "Eleftheros Typos" and "Typos tis Kyriakis," Aris Voudouris. From 1989 to 2009, he was an editor for the same newspapers, and from 2009 to 2011, for the newspaper "Isotimia." Since then, he has been writing freely, with his articles published in newspapers, websites, and blogs. He was the director of the newspaper "Taytotita," an editor for the magazine "Epoptia," and a columnist for the magazine "Oikonomikos Tachydromos." In "Typos tis Kyriakis," he was the initiator and main contributor to the inserts "Orthodoxy and Hellenism" and "Ideodromio," aimed at contributing to the cultural continuity of the Greeks and preserving their spiritual identity. He also selflessly contributed to the creation and collaborated in the early stages of the first ecclesiastical radio station "Piraiki Ecclesia." Throughout his career, he has written approximately 7,000 articles, analyses, research pieces, and reports, many of which were front-page stories, and he has interviewed significant ecclesiastical, intellectual, and political figures. As a journalist, he advocates for social, political, and religious freedoms and is considered one of the pioneers who established authentic ecclesiastical reporting. He authored the book "Giorgos Sarantaris: The Man, the Poet, the Intellectual," published by "Ekplixi" (2011).
