Giorgos Varoufakis

George Varoufakis studied chemistry at the School of Physics and Mathematics of the University of Athens. In 1965, he completed his doctoral dissertation on the study of the corrosion of the bronze statues of Kouros and Artemis displayed at the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus. In 1979, he submitted a habilitation thesis titled "Chemical and Metallurgical Research on 19 Iron Tripod Feet from the Geometric Period," which led to his appointment as an unpaid Assistant Professor at the University of Athens. In 1996, he published the book "Ancient Greece and Quality - The History and Control of Materials that Shaped Greek Civilization," which was released in English in 1999. In 2005, he published for the general public the book "The History of Iron from Homer to Xenophon - Iron Findings and Ancient Greek Literature through the Eyes of a Metallurgist." Since late 2003, he has been the president of "Halyvourgiki" S.A.
