Moving Coil: Aimed at demanding audiophiles. It offers top-level detail and accuracy in sound, but produces a low signal and requires a specialized amplifier (Phono Stage with MC option), while the stylus cannot be replaced separately.
DJ: Specially designed cartridges with exceptionally durable construction to withstand heavy use, scratching, and back-cueing, while also delivering strong and clear bass.
Ceramic: Older technology cartridges mainly found in vintage or very affordable suitcase-style turntables. They are durable but exert more pressure on the record and offer more basic sound quality.
Moving Magnet: The most popular and common type of cartridge. It offers a strong output signal, is compatible with almost all turntables/amplifiers on the market, and allows for easy replacement of only the stylus when it wears out.
Moving Iron: A rare, premium category (such as Grado/Soundsmith) that combines the best of both worlds: the top-level detail and “warm” sound of MC, but with the strong signal of MM for easy compatibility.
