The blood was shrouded in a mysterious veil and inspired awe among ancient peoples. It was used in special treatments and sacred rituals. Additionally, many theories developed around the magical properties of blood.

In Homer and other ancient poets, several elements are highlighted, while much information is drawn from Egyptian papyri, Syrian, Babylonian manuscripts, etc. The effort for blood transfusion dates back to the depths of history. Over time, many attempts at transfusions were made, some successful and others unsuccessful, with the latter predominating. This was also the main reason that led many scientists to become opponents of transfusions.

A landmark in the history of transfusions was the year 1900, when Karl Landsteiner discovered blood groups. The wars that followed and the enormous need for blood led to a significant development in blood donation. With the advancement of science, especially molecular biology, we have been able to see what red cell antigens are and what role they play.

Today, without blood having lost its magic, we have managed to decipher its character and functions, thus turning yesterday's adversary into a valuable ally, constituting yet another therapeutic arrow in the quiver of the clinical doctor and in the service of the patient. However, our daily experience teaches us that there are still many unexplored elements we have yet to learn about this "special delicious juice," as Goethe calls it. Today, the future holds exciting surprises for us.
