Description

3rd   ENRICHED EDITION: March 2022
1st edition: October 2016

This edition presents for the first time the complete records of the two trials of N. Beloyannis and his companions, a large part of the Baboudis signals, the memorandums for the commutation of the death sentences of Beloyannis, Batsis, and Kaloumenos to life imprisonment, commentary on the conduct of the trials, as well as the historical context in which the trials took place.

The content of the historical documents contributes to the reader gaining their own perspective on these specific dramatic events. However, in any case, one cannot overlook decisive factors shaping historical developments, such as: the role of the USA, the context within which the leadership of the KKE operated, particularly N. Zakariadis, the ambivalent stance of the centrist parties, specifically N. Plastiras, the role of the Throne and the Army.

The originality of this study lies in the fact that in some cases the archival material leads to iconoclastic findings: the Americans only came to the forefront of imposing the authoritarian post-civil war framework after the outbreak of the Korean War; the actions of the KKE were far removed from the politics of "weapon at the ready"; the Plastiras government bore very serious responsibilities for the executions; the Palace played a subordinate role compared to that of the USA and the Army.

In the trials themselves, on one hand, the heroism of N. Beloyannis and several others who defended their ideals is impressive. On the other hand, the haste of many defendants to disown their relationship with the communist movement condenses the terms of defeat for the Greek Left in the context of the state terror of the time.

In the third edition, 77 Baboudis signals have been added, new information is presented regarding the biography of Beloyannis as well as Baboudis, and many explanatory footnotes are provided both in the body of the Proceedings and in the Signals. Additionally, the glossary includes 26 brief biographies of individuals referenced in the Signals. At the same time, factual errors that were identified have been corrected, and the content observations expressed by both historians and readers of the edition have been taken into account.

Impartial, insightful, and well-executed attempt to capture the events of post-civil war Greece...
A book that must be read so that the conditions, causes, and consequences of the relentless conflict between right-wing and left-wing factions are not forgotten, situations that led Greek society into a deep crisis and marked the life of the country after the Occupation, during the Civil War, and up until the post-junta period...
History could have been written differently if some patriots had not been arbitrarily condemned and if the leftist mentality had not been betrayed by its own ideology...
