Description & Specifications

In The Society of the Spectacle - published in 1967 - Guy Debord cohesively exposes the ways in which modern society operates as shaped since the late 1920s and that has grown, in a paroxysmal and paranoid manner, to this day.

Half a century after its first publication, this unique book remains dynamically relevant. Debord writes: “The spectacle cannot be understood as a mere abuse of a world of visuality, as the product of techniques for the mass diffusion of images. It is rather a Weltanschauung [worldview] that has become real, that has been expressed materially. It is a view of the world that has become objective.”

As for the author himself, he followed a single rule in life until his voluntary death. He summarizes it in the preface to the third French edition of the work at hand: “One must read this book with the understanding that it was written with the intent to harm the society of the spectacle. I never said anything outrageous.”
