This volume is a labor of love. As the author explains, her interest in traditional potters began during the 1960s, a period when many of them were still practicing their craft.
Over a span of about twenty years, Maria diligently and carefully gathered a wealth of information about all aspects of the lives and work of these potters, which now compose this volume. It was worth the wait for such a long period.
Maria, as a professional ceramicist, personally studied and detailed the potters and their workshops throughout Greece. As one might expect, the most well-known production centers, Bounaria in Messinia, Sifnos in the Cyclades, Marousi in Attica, and Thrapsano in Crete. However, lesser-known places, such as in Thessaly, the Ionian Islands, and the Eastern Aegean, are also presented here for the first time.
Maria presents not only the working methods, materials, and items produced by the potters but also the social organization of the workshops in a historical context. The text is accompanied by exceptional architectural plans and photographic material.
