The classic work by Herman Melville, Moby-Dick, one of the masterpieces of American literature, was originally published in England in 1851 under the title The Whale and subsequently in the USA with its now-famous title.
It is - seemingly - an adventure on the seas of the entire world, where a maniacal captain of a whaling ship, Ahab, has made it his life's goal to kill a whale of enormous size, Moby-Dick, from whom he lost his leg in a previous encounter.
However, this epic work essentially represents a battle of man against the forces of nature, containing a multitude of details (often quite lengthy) regarding the whales that were fiercely hunted by humans in previous centuries, and simultaneously making numerous philosophical references to significant historical events around the world with astonishing symbolism.
Undoubtedly, it is one of the greatest works of world literature.
