Description

Nikitaras (Nikitas Stamatelopoulos) 1781 - 1849. He was born in the village of Tourkoleka in Megalopolis. He was a nephew of Kolokotronis. Before the Revolution, he was a klepht.

With the proclamation of the Revolution, he fought wherever his homeland needed him. At Dolianna (May 1821), with 200 men, he repelled an attack by 6,000 Turks. He fought against Dramalas at Dervenakia at the site of Agios Sostis and then in the battle of Agionoriou, also in Valteci, Nafplio, Stylida, Messolonghi, and Faliro.

In 1839, he was imprisoned on charges of conspiring against Otto. He was released after two years and died in Piraeus, poor and forgotten, in 1849. He was buried near Kolokotronis, as was his wish.
