Description

Description

In the book "General Vegetable Gardening," an attempt is made to provide the most complete and up-to-date record of the existing general knowledge in the field of agricultural science that deals with the production and post-harvest utilization of herbaceous plants for fresh consumption - the vegetables or garden crops known to all of us.

After an initial introduction to vegetable gardening as a scientific and productive field, the most important types of garden crops for Greece are described. Subsequently, the impact of the root and aerial environment on vegetable production is analyzed in detail, as well as the various techniques of outdoor and greenhouse cultivation, such as low coverage, organic vegetable production, hydroponics, etc. Then, the propagation material of vegetable gardening and the techniques of establishing vegetable crops, either by direct seeding or by producing seedlings in nurseries and transplanting them, are extensively examined. Separate chapters are dedicated to irrigation and nutrition-fertilization, other cultivation care after crop establishment and before harvest, and finally, the harvesting process itself. The book concludes with a concise but comprehensive description of the post-harvest handling of vegetables and their preservation methods when intended for fresh market consumption. The writing of this book is based not only on extensive bibliography but also on the author's many years of involvement with vegetable crops, as well as information gathered from producers, agronomists, and other stakeholders in the vegetable production and distribution chain.

Although it is primarily written as an educational aid for students in the relevant departments of universities and technical institutes, it is also useful to all agronomists and agricultural technologists and to all those involved, in one way or another, with the productive sector of vegetables, even to amateur vegetable gardeners.
