Description

After the conquest of Crete (1669), no signs on the horizon seem to announce the expected dawn for the enslaved Greeks; thus, they continue their difficult and monotonous lives.

The only options left to them are the harsh endurance that leads them to isolation, dehumanization, and barbarism, flight or apostasy. Indeed, the continuous temptations, oppressions, and feelings of inferiority undermine the morale of many, and their example leads entire groups towards Islamization (especially in isolated and tumultuous areas such as Epirus, Macedonia, Pontus, Cyprus, and Crete), while others, chased by violence and poverty, flee in search of better living conditions abroad or within the country.
