In this travel edition, the land areas are not made up of individual hex tiles but of six pieces that can be rearranged in different ways, changing the layout of the board each time. The players' tokens and resource cards are stored in drawers on the side of the board, which folds into a trapezoid shape.
The Catan: Traveler – Compact Edition also includes a two-player variant, which uses cards allowing one player to "impose" a trade on the other. In this case, the first player takes two cards from their opponent and then returns any one card of their choice.
