The book is organizationally divided into six broader thematic areas: Linear Algebra (Chapter 1), Differentiation of Real Functions (Chapters 2 and 3), Optimization of Real Functions (Chapters 4 and 5), Integral Calculus (Chapter 6), Differential Equations and Difference Equations (Chapter 7), and Special Topics in Applied Mathematics in Management and Economic Science (Chapter 8).
The book begins with an Introductory Chapter that briefly summarizes, in the form of a review, fundamental mathematical concepts which are largely known to the reader from their pre-university education. The main body of the structure of the book is divided into eight chapters.
Chapter One examines methods in Linear Algebra, placing particular emphasis on solving systems of linear equations. Chapter Two introduces the concept of the derivative and presents basic methods for differentiating functions of one variable. Chapter Three extends differential calculus to functions of multiple variables, allowing for the study of models that involve many variables.
The subject of Chapter Four is the optimization of functions of one or more variables when there are no additional constraints among the variables that appear. Chapter Five examines optimization problems when there are constraints that restrict the way the variables of the problem can change.
This is followed by Chapter Six, which introduces the concept of the integral and presents methods for calculating both the indefinite and definite integral. Chapter Seven advances to the study of models that include differential equations and difference equations.
Chapter Eight, the final chapter of the book, offers a presentation of special topics in applied mathematics in management and economic science, such as game theory, applying and extending the mathematical methods from the previous chapters to specific models in economic theory.
The intended audience for this book is primarily at the undergraduate level, but the authors believe it may also serve as a useful supplement for selected graduate programs.
The use of mathematics is no longer the exclusive privilege and tool of traditional sciences, but has become widespread and established across almost the entire spectrum of social sciences. The 21st century is the century of mathematics.
