The structure of the book aims to be understandable to the student who has never heard of masonry, useful for the engineer who has been dealing with it empirically until now, and appealing to the engineer who systematically engages with masonry constructions, primarily through interventions.
Thus, initially, the topic of the materials that constitute it and the determination of their mechanical properties is covered. Subsequently, the topics of forming new constructions with better seismic response and the design of both unreinforced and reinforced masonry, according to Eurocode 6, are developed.
The presentation of the pathology of load-bearing masonry structures and the thorough investigation of their seismic behavior aim to identify vulnerabilities, interpret the causes of damage, and choose the most appropriate formation of new constructions.
Repair techniques and strengthening, as well as their applications in specific cases of damage, are developed and supplemented with data on their effectiveness in conjunction with their cost so that the choice of interventions can be made as rationally as possible.
Finally, the book includes information on the methods for assessing existing masonry and a chapter on special constructions, such as arches, domes, and cupolas.
