Ancient remains are historical evidence. History is the ark of human experience and self-awareness, and within its depth, the evolution and progress are recorded.
This also explains the intense and ongoing confrontation of our society with the ancient, which is briefly outlined in this book, because the ancient can only ever be contemporary.
Progress and evolution require cultivation, they require education, and history, as a holistic view, as well as with its immediate material evidence, offers condensed human experience, thus the true cultivation, the education, which is the formation of the individual for creative function as a person and as a member of society.
