The rhizotomists were herb gatherers. The Rhizotomicon by Crateva (2nd century BC) has been lost. The original text, On Medical Material or De materia medica by Dioscorides (1st century AD), no longer exists. What is found written in manuscripts is the result of copying from an unknown archetype.
The oldest copy, the famous Greek, illustrated manuscript of the 6th century, has been preserved in the Austrian National Library in Vienna since the 16th century. The text On Medical Material spread, was studied, translated, and wandered, out of necessity, for the identification of useful substances with therapeutic properties available in nature.
The first manuscripts became a source of information about the active ingredients of plants. In Dioscorides' work, there is knowledge that seems to be based on tradition, which comes from legendary rhizotomists. This knowledge sparked a fascination with materials from nature, in a process of perpetual search, aimed at improving human life.
This information is conveyed to us by manuscript codices of the work On Medical Material, which continued to be disseminated through printing. Mythical knowledge, observation, empirical approach, and artistic representation all aided the research of persistent scholars and the spread of the value hidden in the diversity of plants to this day.
In the book you hold in your hands, the journey of Dioscorides' work is presented, and hundreds of plants are mentioned, arranged in alphabetical order (for convenience) in codices with cognitive, cultural, and exchange value.
