On the occasion of an international conference dedicated to the memory of the distinguished researcher and sociologist Stathis Damianakos, Greek and French colleagues, friends, and students gather in this volume with texts that refer to the life and work of the tireless scholar of the Greek countryside and continue the dialogue on his rich, multidimensional, and often provocative findings.
The understanding of the rural world, and specifically the dialectic of its resistance and incorporation into the urban post-war Greek society, constituted the main direction of Damianakos's research.
At the dawn of the 20th century, in the era of post-agricultural countryside and the continuously intensifying and transforming osmosis between urban and rural spaces, what is the content, and how does "agriculturality" manifest, decline, or mutate in Greek society? This question forms the explicit or latent axis of reflection in the collection of essays in the present volume.
The answers to this question necessitate the articulation of the workings of post-war rural sociology with today's data, questions, and tools for understanding the contemporary globalized society of information and multiculturalism.
