The music of Epirus, like that of most regions in Greece, is known to the general public through an idol, which has been shaped by multiple factors for over a century.
In the form of this idol is reflected the overall perception of folk music of the countryside, which -formed in the urban space- promoted an idealized past in contrast to a 'degenerated' present.
This distinction introduced the 'anxiety' over the risk of altering the 'genuineness' and 'authenticity' of the 'tradition.' However, the frame of reference invoked by this 'genuineness' is simply a sequence of stereotypes, which in an attempt to standardize key elements of Epirus's musical culture, isolated it from its vital space, made it picturesque, and drained it of the functionalities that were the foundation of its existence, in other words, it 'folklorized' it.
