The Beginning of Knowledge by Hans-Georg Gadamer is the culmination of the interpretative approach to Presocratic philosophy, as we have come to know it in the Beginning of Philosophy, combined with an expansion of its thematic scope.
Initially, the philosopher engages with the interpretation of the fragments attributed to Heraclitus from the written tradition of late antiquity. The lesser-known Heraclitean fragments are treated as palimpsests with the potential to reveal an original and groundbreaking way of understanding dialectical contradictions, which noticeably distinguishes the Ephesian thinker from earlier Ionian natural philosophers and lays the groundwork for his utilization by Hegel, Nietzsche, and Heidegger, even towards different philosophical directions.
Gadamer also focuses on the discourse of the interpretation of Presocratic cosmology by Plato, highlighting in this context the special weight of Democritus' atomic theory. The confrontation between Democritus and Plato would prove to be of decisive importance for the formation of mature Platonic philosophy of nature, while Gadamer shows that through the comparison and confrontation with fundamental assumptions of modern and contemporary physics, Platonic theoretical achievements gain an unexpected relevance.
