"My century, my beast," exclaimed Osip Mandelstam, foreseeing with dread the 20th century. The same can be said for the century we are currently living in.
In this beastly century that has begun, pain, suffering, economic hardship, and even physical annihilation should be considered a given for large segments of the population. If we want not just to emerge from the crisis and return to where we were, but to give birth to something new, something that will change the predetermined course, what we need is the accumulation of ideas that can revive the Principle of Hope.
The texts in this volume revolve around some more or less apparent axes: counter-insurgency, crisis, state of exception, fascism, totalitarianism, and finally, the perspective of utopia.
Their only power is the decisive, combative (in)optimism of non-resignation, which knows that despite defeats and disappointments, despite the barbarity and bestiality that surrounds us, these ideas have the hidden or overt hope to play the same role for the cause of universal human emancipation as coal does for fire.
Signposts to possible "exits from danger," the texts in this volume do not forget that "history is a nightmare from which we are trying to awaken."
