Collecting the scattered and unknown remnants of the medieval Greek theater, I publish this volume as a precursor to this theater. I chose to title this first collection Cretan Theater, because all the dramas contained within it were written by Cretans and in the Cretan dialect.
The present volume includes:
- Two tragedies
- One comedy
- One pastoral drama (comedic tragedy)
Another volume will contain the remains of the Cretan Theater, that is, other unknown tragedies, comedies, moral tales, mysteries, and such. However, this two-volume collection, while encompassing the most important remnants of the modern Greeks' theatrical scene, by no means exhausts the preserved material, as other dramas and comedies in different dialects have also been preserved and there are strong hopes that not even the Byzantine theater has been entirely lost.
