Description

Description

The Beautiful Night by Thomas Korovinis is an extensive narrative that oscillates between chronicle and novel. The text meticulously records the people, groups, and events of a period that marked the life of Thessaloniki for about two decades, from 1985 to the early years of the new millennium, with a central focus on the nightlife atmosphere of popular venues, particularly the historic establishment BEAUTIFUL NIGHT on Papafi Street, which was known among its clientele as THE TEMPLE.

Detailed or general references are also made to people and aspects of life in Thessaloniki, especially in the artistic scene, from around 1950 until 1985. The narrative aims to document and preserve in collective memory a part of the human geography of a - alas - lost era.

Political events and their echoes, class varieties and guild conflicts, social perceptions and mindsets, libidinous exuberances and romantic shortages vividly color the canvas of the text as they weave through descriptions of personalities, personal confessions, interpersonal relationships, lengthy dialogues, and many incredible yet authentic anecdotes.

The narrative is accompanied from start to finish by lively or melancholic strums of three-string bouzouki and is soaked in the aroma of indomitable rebetiko and folk songs that have marked our lives.

Nice book. It reminded me of the nights I spent at the homonymous shop on Papafi Street in the mid-80s, when such a shop did not exist in Athens.
The book is well-written and interesting for both young people and middle-aged people like me :-)
