Byzantine literature remains largely unknown beyond a narrow circle of specialists. Very few authors, such as Procopius, Michael Psellos, or Anna Comnena, are familiar to the broader public, and even then, only by name. This is partly due to the lack of a history of this over millennium-old literature that appeals not only to the scholar and the student but also to a wider educated audience.
This gap aims to be filled by the book of Jan Olof Rosenqvist, which presents Byzantine literature not by literary genres, as is usually done in existing manuals, but in chronological order.
