Description & Specifications

This dictionary began in 1985 as a personal effort to search for Greek terms in order to provide their corresponding English translations, since a large part of the literature in psychology was in English. We quickly realized that the problem was not personal but common among many colleagues.

After two editions of the Concise Interpretive Dictionary of Psychological Terms (1989, 1997), changes in the field of psychology, the proliferation of textbooks, books, and scientific journals, as well as the growing interest of young people in studying psychology, created the need for a handbook that would cover new theories and concepts in the field and explain psychological terms in more detail.

At the same time, the inconsistency in translating terms into Greek, observed in different textbooks, served as additional motivation for us, prompting us to collect the terms from existing editions and compare them to arrive at those that were most accepted or, in our opinion, most accurately conveyed the concepts.

In the effort to write this work, we referred to encyclopedias and psychology dictionaries, as well as the ever-increasing Greek literature in psychology, while also consulting experts from related fields.

The dictionary consists of three parts. The first part includes the Greek terms, their English translations, and a brief interpretation of them. The second part presents very brief biographical details of significant psychologists mentioned in the first part. The third part contains an extensive English-Greek glossary of terms.

The dictionary is intended for psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, mental health counselors, scientists from related fields, as well as students and learners of psychology and social sciences in general.
