The Quran is the holy scripture of Muslims and is regarded by them as the very word of God. According to orthodox Islamic teaching, the Quran is uncreated, meaning it has existed before the creation of the world, presented in written tablets by God, portions of which were revealed through prophets (rasuls) at extraordinary intervals to humanity. Thus, each new prophet added new teachings to the originally heavenly message during the evolutionary phase of revelation, until the complete content of God's message was conveyed to humanity through Muhammad, who delivered it in full, being considered the last of the prophets and the pinnacle of prophethood.
As a sacred text, the Quran encompasses everything pertaining to the world as it states: "We have not omitted anything in this book." Thus, it includes issues of cosmogony, worship, the organization of human relationships, legal provisions, sanctions, and more. However, the Quran typically presents only the general principles or guiding provisions, which are subsequently detailed and specified by the practice of the prophet (sunnah), which is why out of the many thousands of verses it contains, only about two hundred refer to legal rules and of these, after the process of naskh, only eighty remain in effect.
