The literal meaning of the Sanskrit word mandala is circle, but in Eastern religious tradition, it has established itself as a term that denotes circular sacred images, painted or etched in sand, used as means of meditation or as protective symbols, primarily in Tibetan Buddhism.
Essentially, it is a universal symbol, found since ancient times in various cultures around the world, with the strongest example being the magical circles drawn in the sand by the Native Americans of North America. In psychological science, they were introduced by C.G. Jung and gained a different dimension.
