The similarity of Vassilis Tsitsanis' "Cloudy Sunday" with the hymn "To the Defender" of the Orthodox tradition is today a popular subject of exchange on the internet, both in the forums of rebetiko enthusiasts and in those of cantors.
In the first part of the book, some of the views that have been expressed over time regarding the relationships between the two musical genres in general, as well as the origin of "Cloudy Sunday" from "To the Defender," are presented.
The second part of the book examines the historical relationships between the two musical genres, composing a peculiar musical historiography that often revolves around the issue of Greek identity.
The third part deals with the relationship between the teacher and the student, which lies at the core of what is commonly referred to as "style." The examination of certain cantorial "schools" and the dialogue between tradition and innovation in musical practice are particularly interesting issues.
Finally, in the fourth part of the book, the purely musicological analysis, a new comparison of the two works, "Cloudy Sunday" and "To the Defender," is conducted.
