Euripides is the third of the trio of great poets of dramatic poetry in ancient Greece. He is characterized as a realist writer, as he presents the characters in his works as they are in reality, and a philosopher from the stage, because he thoughtfully addresses the themes he explores.

From his rich body of work, one satyr play, the Cyclops, and eighteen tragedies survive: Alcestis, Andromache, Medea, Heraclidae, Hippolytus, Hecuba, The Suppliants, Heracles Mad, The Trojan Women, Iphigenia in Tauris, Electra, Helen, Ion, Phoenician Women, Orestes, Bacchae, Iphigenia in Aulis, Rhesus.
