Sami Varsauer, an elderly Argentine actor, kept the memories of his life in a shoebox. After his death, the contents of the box, old theater programs, fall into the hands of a journalism student who is researching the history of Jewish theater.
Among the yellowed papers, the student finds the program of a forgotten musical performance from 1927 titled "The Moldovan Pimp." The play unfolds the tragic epic of Jewish women who set off from Europe at the end of the 19th century to marry in America, but ended up in the cabarets of Argentina, deceived by an unscrupulous ring of their fellow Jewish pimps.
The thread of the narrative in Kozarinski's novel connects eras and continents, myth and reality. At one end of the thread are the neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, the bars, the popular theaters, and the people who once arrived there carrying their great hopes in small luggage. At the other end, the outskirts of Paris, where underage prostitutes from Eastern Europe are today living the disappointment of their own expectations.
"The Moldovan Pimp" addresses deeply human themes without melodrama, simultaneously echoing the melodies of Yiddish theater, which traveled with thousands of Jewish migrants from the Russian steppe to the pampas, intertwining with the rhythms of Argentina, tango, and milonga.
In 2007, "The Moldovan Pimp" was nominated for the best foreign novel award given by the newspaper "Independent."
