Description

In the last decades of the 19th century, amidst the dynamic clash between modern pressures and social resistances, some of the ideas that defined Greek identity began to become stereotypes and often transformed into sources of fear.

Among others, distrust and fear towards the West - this "adversary" of Orthodoxy - became stereotypes, as did distrust and fear towards intellectuals - these "enemies" of the people - and distrust and fear towards parliamentarism - this "opposing" system to the traditional structures of Greek society.

A key position of Rena Stavridis-Patarikiou's book is the observation that from the combination of this fear of the West and Western-imported liberalism will arise the fears for the Greek-Christian identity threatened by Europe, which will crystallize in the 20th century.
