Description

The CAMeC hosts the first major solo exhibition of Manolis Bamvouris in Italy under the title Possessions, with which the Greek artist sought to distinguish certain circles of his photographic work.

There are multiple reasons for which I conceived the idea of such an initiative, to reflect on the work of a contemporary photographer, so unique, who deserves and is worth the effort to focus on. Above all, because Bamvouris has reached a stage of experience, where his photography significantly differentiates from others and holds an original linguistic phenomenon, capable of understanding its own position in the evolution of this linguistic form.

Furthermore, he has a deep, lasting, and steady relationship with Italy, considering the frequency of his stays since '68 - for studies in Florence and Rome, and throughout the country.

Finally, his relationship with the Italian and European artistic scene - always through the medium of photography - is above all that of a witness and passionate, sharp and thorough, critical reader of various human events and the artistic activity of some central figures of the second half of the twentieth century, such as, for example, Gianni Contempory.

Among the various qualities inscribed in his photographic work, which undoubtedly contains examples of exceptional level, a thoughtful stance differentiates and defines him, granting him substance and identity.

Indeed, the different circles of the exhibited works in La Spezia each place a design and a concept that on one hand organize the thematic introspections, while on the other show how the action of the gaze constitutes a quintessential design thought, aesthetic contemplation, criticism, and poetry.

Manvouris's photography often questions actions, realities, and things, whose motivations, subjects, and causes we must imagine, because in each image the experience has already been realized through the gaze - and it is precisely the image that proves it - which visually and perceptually consumed its own action, making us at the same time both participants and spectators.
