This book is not an exact or academic translation; rather, it is an attempt to follow the original intention of Stanislavski: to provide an accessible explanation of the "system" for aspiring actors, without abstract theories. Consequently, the form he chose emerges: the diary of a young student describing the acting lessons given by Tortsov (Stanislavski) and his struggle, along with his classmates, to perfect a new method.
The work of the actor has always presented problems both for Russian speakers and non-speakers. Firstly, it is an unfinished work. In 1888, when Stanislavski was around 25, he conceived the idea for a "grammar" of acting. His first attempt, A Rough Handbook, dates back to 1906, when he started the "system." He then tried to present it officially in the form of lectures and classes but concluded that actors do not respond to this kind of approach. He gave a series of lectures at the Bolshoi School between 1919 and 1921, which provide the first exploratory description of the "system," but he never attempted to publish them.
He then experimented with the form of the novel in The Story of a Role and The Story of the Performance, but ultimately abandoned both. Finally, towards the end of the 1920s, he arrived at a diary form, a daily record of the lesson from a student as he trains: The Actor's Work with Himself.
From the Translator's Foreword of the English Edition: "My book does not pretend to be scientific [...]. Intuition should be the foundation of our work, for our constant concern is the living human spirit, the life of the human soul. You cannot create or know a living spirit through your mind; you do so primarily through emotion. This awareness is created and perceived by the living spirit of the actor himself. In theater, knowledge means emotion. If my book influences future generations and draws some attention, it will become the subject of stringent critique, both scientific and non-scientific. This is welcome because criticism from intelligent professionals can illuminate and explain the shortcomings of my book. I will be proud and pleased to be the cause of such public discussions and studies, which will be directed towards the true nature of our profession [...]". Konstantin Stanislavski
