This book is not an exact or academic translation; rather, it is an attempt to follow the original purpose of Stanislavski: to offer an accessible explanation of the "system" for aspiring actors, devoid of abstract theories.
Consequently, the form he chose emerges: the diary of a young student describing the acting lessons given by Tortsov (Stanislavski) and his struggle, along with his classmates, to perfect a new method. The actor's work always presented problems for both Russian speakers and non-speakers.
First, it is an incomplete work. In 1888, when Stanislavski was around 25, he conceived the idea for a "grammar" of acting. His first attempt, A Draft Handbook, dates back to 1906, when he started the "system." He then tried to present it officially in the form of lectures and classes but concluded that actors do not respond to this kind of approach.
He gave a series of lectures at the Bolshoi School between 1919 and 1921, which constitute the first exploratory description of the "system," yet he never attempted to publish them. He then experimented with the form of the novel in The Story of a Role and The Story of a Performance, both of which he abandoned.
Finally, towards the end of the 1920s, he settled on a diary form, a daily record of the lesson from a student as he trains: The actor's work with himself.
From the Preface of the translator of the English edition: "My book does not pretend to be scientific [...]. Intuition must be the foundation of our work, for our continuous concern is the living human spirit, the life of the human soul. You cannot create or know a living spirit through your mind; you do it primarily through emotion. This consciousness is created and perceived by the living spirit of the actor himself. In theater, knowledge means feeling. If my book influences future generations and attracts some attention, it will become the subject of strict criticism, both scientific and non-scientific. This is welcome because criticism from intelligent professionals can illuminate and explain the shortcomings of my book. I will be proud and happy to become the cause of such public discussions and studies, which will be directed towards the true nature of our profession [...]." Konstantin Stanislavski
