This volume studies modern Greek folk epitaphs, a form of contemporary folklore that is constantly expanding and spreading as part of our modern burial and funeral customs and traditions.
Based on a rich collection of material gathered from almost the entire Greek territory over the past decade, typological, morphological, and thematic observations are made, comparing modern Greek folk epitaphs with folk oral laments and ancient Greek corresponding epitaphs, integrating their composition and use within the framework of contemporary Greek death customs.
At the end, an appendix provides texts from the epitaphs being studied, allowing the reader to form their own opinion about their form and content.
Thus, this study ultimately becomes a more comprehensive exploration of how modern folk individuals confront death, especially in urban environments, and is part of the effort to study contemporary forms of folk customs, which is promoted by modern Greek folklore.
