The book describes a method of "treatment" for the mentally ill that was used in churches and monasteries, during which the patient was confined in a very small cell, chained until the priest decided that they were healed. The author leaves the question hanging as to whether this "treatment" is truly harsher than psychoanalysis and the violent confrontation with the Unconscious that it entails.
